Blackrock Town Hall Development Gets Go Ahead


Minister for Social and Family Affairs Mary Hanafin T.D. has welcomed the decision by the Department of Education and Science for the redevelopment of Blackrock Town Hall to commence construction in 2009.

The landmark building in Blackrock has not been used to its full capacity in recent years. On completion the refurbished and extended premises will accommodate up to 850 students with Dun Laoghaire Senior College. The College is one of the largest providers of further education opportunities in the country.

 Welcoming the announcement Mary Hanafin said ‘Staff and students will now have a chance to pursue a wide range of professional career courses in modern facilities’ The building will also accommodate Blackrock Library with enhanced surroundings for the public in a unique partnership between Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and the Department of Education and Science.

 The partnership proposal was first discussed when Mary Hanafin was Minister for Education and Science. ‘The imaginative approach by the partnership resulted in a funding structure that will provide the local community with an excellent library and offer students of all ages opportunities for further education’
